Nearly deserted in winter, the population of Punta del Este explodes with on its beaches during the day, and in the clubs and restaurants at night. Droves of sun worshippers and revelers from Montevideo, Argentina, (just across the Rio de la Plata) mingle with trendy international travelers who flock to the beaches, casinos, restaurants and night spots. They arrive by land, air and yacht to the the "Monaco of South America". Located directly across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, Colonia del Sacramento, is steeped in history. Built primarily by the Portuguese, the style of houses, and cobblestoned streets, are reminiscent of old Lisbon. The winding streets and colorful houses are a delight to explore. The historic quarter, Barrío Historico, sits on a small peninsula jutting out into the river, was named a UNESCO heritage site in 1995.
